  1. The Bolsheviks took over by force.

The Russian Revolution has two parts.  The February revolution was where Tsar Nicholas II abdicated the throne.  A provisional government was set up until elections were held.  A lot of violence happened between the Feb. Revolution and the elections.  But the main event was the October Revolution.  Lenin persuaded the Bolsheviks to strike right before the elections.  They took over Petrograd (also called St. Petersburg and Leningrad at certain times).  They eventually took Moscow as well.

In November, the elections were held.  The SR's won over 50%, and the Bolsheviks won about 25%.  But since the Bolsheviks had already taken over with military force, they immediately dissolved the parliament, declared the elections invalid, and held onto power.

A bloody civil war was fought from 1917-1921.  More than 10 million died, but the Reds finally won out.  They secured power and held onto it until the collapse of the Soviet Union.

  4. The "Socialist Revolutionaries" (SR's) were a group of liberal-Socialists who formed in the beginning of the 1900's.  They played a major role in the 1905 and 1917 revolutions.

At first they were a Democratic Socialist party, but they soon turned to militarism and terrorism.  They weren't too friendly with the Bolsheviks because the SR's didn't support a Communist revolution.  But they tried to work with each other during the 1917 Provisional Government.

Once the Bolsheviks took over in the October Revolution, the SR's were kicked out of the government and most were arrested during the Civil War.

Once Stalin came around, he had all the SR leaders remaining in Russia executed by 1937.

  5. Yeah, they recieved 25%.  The Socialist Revolutionaries got about 50% and were violently opposed to Bolshevism.  Most other parties were also the same.  Thus around 75% of the population was resistant to the Bolsheviks.  So once they took power, they had to clamp down on the people to get them to obey.
